On Linux, start, stop and restart mysql on command line window

sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld start
sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld restart

or

sudo service mysqld start
sudo service mysqld stop
sudo service mysqld restart

or

sudo service mysql start
sudo service mysql stop
sudo service mysql restart

On Mac, start, stop and restart mysql on terminal/command line window

sudo /usr/local/bin/mysql.server start
