contacts sync from old versions of iOS to google gmail
For iOS versions below 4.0, there is no options to sync contact from the iPhone to gmail contacts directly through the gmail app on iPhone, because the gmail app requires iOS version 4.0 above.
To sync contacts from old iOS versions (below 4.0), you have to use the vCard file which can be exported from Mac Address Book.
1. Sync contacts from your iphone with iTune
2. Open up Mac Address Book
3. Select all(Command A) contacts in the Names column
4. File->Export->Export vCard
5. Sign in to gmail
6. Go to Contacts
7. Import contacts
8. Choose the vCard files you exported from step 4
9. Click Imoport
10. Done
Note: The above contact synchronization from iPhone to gmail works for all versions of iOS
